Happy New Year!

Today we read a book about New Year's Day.  We talked about what a resolution was and brainstormed our own resolutions and goals for the year. Students wrote about their goal for 2017 and why this goal was important to them.  Ask your child what their New Year's resolution is for 2017!

Brownie Points!!

We had some very exciting news yesterday in 1S, we earned our last brownie point!  We created a list of different things that we wanted to do for filling up our brownie tray.  Then we took a class vote to see which idea had the most votes.  The winner was pajama day and stuffed animal day!  First graders can wear their pajamas and bring a small stuffed animal (must fit inside their backpack) to school on Thursday, November 17th!

Duck for President!

Over the past few weeks we have been reading fiction books about voting and elections.  Today we read Duck for President and had our very own election to vote for Farmer Brown or Duck for president.  Below are a few pictures of our private voting stations.

After everyone voted, they wrote about who they would vote for and why.

Once all the results were in, we created a graph of how many votes each candidate had.  We used this graph to make observations about what we noticed when looking at the results.  As you can see, Duck won the campaign in 1S!

Be sure to ask your child about this fun voting activity!

Stellaluna

Yesterday we read the book Stellaluna.  We talked about what the problem was in a story and what the solution was.  After reading the book, students wrote about the problem and how the problem was solved.  Ask your child to tell you about Stellaluna and how her problem was solved in the story.
After we finished our writing, we made cute bats to go along with the story and to help decorate our classroom for Halloween!

Way to go 1S!!

Columbus Day!

During Social Studies, we have been learning about Christopher Columbus and why he is important to history.  Students watched a video about Christopher Columbus, created a representation of his ship and wrote what they learned about him.  Be sure to ask your child what they learned about Christopher Columbus.  Check out our work below!

Here we are watching a BrainPop Jr. video about Christopher Columbus:
Here we are working hard on writing what we learned about Christopher Columbus.

Here is the finished product! Be sure to check your child's backpack for their work, they were pretty excited and proud to bring them home today!

Reader's Workshop

Today in reader's workshop we talked about the three ways to read a book.  Ask your child to tell you what the three different ways are.
Here we are practicing our stamina during reader's workshop.  Today we read silently for 12 solid minutes!  Yay 1S, keep up the good work!
