Aquarium Field Trip!
On Wednesday, we took a field trip to the New England Aquarium to conclude our study of fish. Ask your child about the different fish and animals that they saw and which was their favorite. Also, be sure to ask them what makes a fish a fish!
Science Fun!
Today, we put a twist on the game Headbandz in 1S! First graders each had a picture of an animal on their head. They had to ask their partner questions based on life cycle, anatomy, habitat and body covering to figure out if it was a fish, bird or insect that was on their head. They had a lot of fun:).

How Do You Measure Up to Abe Lincoln
This week we have been learning about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Did you know that Abraham Lincoln was our tallest president at 6 feet 4 inches tall? We have also been learning about measurement in math, so we decided to see how tall we were in comparison to the 16th president. Check us out below!

Welcome back! We have been very busy in 1S over the past couple of weeks. Here are a few highlights from our learning:
- In Fundations, we have been learning about the suffix s. Ask your child what a suffix is and the 2 different sounds that the suffix s can make at the end of a word.
- In Writer's Workshop, we have have working on teaching books. Students have been writing books about topics in which they feel they are experts in. Their books contain a table of contents, headings, diagrams, creative titles and so much more! Ask your child what they wrote their teaching book about.
- In Science, we started to study a new animal family with Mrs. Krass. This animal family has 6 legs, 2 antennae and an exoskeleton. Any guesses as to what it might be? Ask your child about this animal family and what they have learned about it so far.
- In Math, we have been working on data analysis including; sorting and classifying data, representing data and describing data. Ask your child what the word data means.
- In Social Studies, we learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and what his dream was. Next week, we will be working on a project about our dreams to make the world a better place.
- In Reader's Workshop, we continue to talk about strategies to solve tricky words. We have been reading a variety of fiction and nonfiction books during independent reading and reading groups. Ask your child what the difference between fiction and nonfiction is and what the purpose of each text is.
- Here are a few pictures from the week:
Reminder, please make sure that you send your child to school with appropriate clothes for winter play! This includes snow pants, boots and shoes to change into, hats, gloves, etc.
Enjoy the long weekend!
