Discovery Science Visit

Today, Miss Stella from Discovery Science came to teach the kids about weather!  They learned about the different types of clouds, temperature, the water cycle and so much more during her visit! Check out the pictures below and be sure to ask your child about what they learned!  Thanks to the Deerfield Cultural Enrichment Program for providing this engaging experience for us! 

Coding in First Grade!

Yesterday, Mrs. Kress came in and showed us a new coding activity.  First graders worked together to write a code to get one friend through the foam maze and to the robot!  This required students to use their problem-solving skills and most importantly, to work together as a team.  A big thanks to Mrs. Kress for sharing this engaging activity with us!

Morse Code

This week in science we learned about Morse Code and how people could communicate if they didn't have phones, email, FaceTime, etc.  First graders created their own code that their partners had to figure out using the Morse Code Alphabet.

Reader's Workshop:

This week in Reader's Workshop we learned how readers get super smart about nonfiction topics!  So far, we have learned about three things that readers can do to help them to get super smart about nonfiction topics.  Ask your child to tell you what they are (listed on the chart paper below:)).

 

Writer's Workshop

This week in writer's workshop we began working on "All About Me" books.  First graders came up with different headings for their all about books, for example; My Family, My Favorite Foods, Sports I Like, etc.  Ask your child what their different headings are for their all about book.  They also began to write about some of their headings.  We also talked about "calling the COPS" on our writing.  This is a tool to help us to make sure hat we are using capital letters, organizing our work, adding punctuation and making sure we're checking the word wall for spelling words.
